L’Espace Helenbeck à Paris expose du
20 septembre au 28 octobre 2006 une artiste américaine qui
vit et travaille à Miami, Sara STITES. L’orientation
de l’Espace Helenbeck est de permettre à des artistes
internationaux d’exposer pour la première fois en France,
de découvrir ainsi d’autres univers artistiques, certains
déconcertants et intrigants. C’est le cas de cette artiste
qui élabore un questionnement déroutant autour de l’animalité,
l’humain, « les croisements génétiques »,
le reconnaissable et l’improbable. Des œuvres de très
grands formats renforcent l’étrangeté de cet
univers mystérieux et fantastique qui nous dépasse
et nous dérange. Des sculptures et des dessins de format plus
réduit obligent le visiteur-regardeur à s’arrêter, à essayer
de comprendre…Par ailleurs, l’artiste intervient sur
du mobilier (concept élaboré par l’espace Helenbeck)
transposant un univers insaisissable et imaginaire sur un support
tangible.
Les œuvres énigmatiques de Sara Stites impressionnent
par leur dimension, donnent le sentiment d’être dépassé,
submergé, de ne pas vraiment saisir… On reconnaît
des formes qui nous semblent familières et pourtant… Croisement
entre l’animal, le végétal et l’humain.
Ces trois dimensions s’interpénètrent, fusionnent
ne respectant aucune règle de l’ordre naturel du monde.
Des formes surgissent, inquiétantes parfois menaçantes.
Excroissances, appendices, sections de parties de corps, pilosité abondante…Des
formes improbables et troublantes apparaissent par cette manipulation
génétique et artistique : des coulées infinies,
d’étranges insectes, des ossatures et des tubes digestifs
sectionnés, des seins frôlant des ailes, des pattes
et des cornes…un monde perturbant !
Le travail de Sara Stites est de mélanger et de réunifier
le règne animal, végétal et humain. Une démarche
qui permet d’élaborer des œuvres illimitées,
impossibles, élégantes et dérangeantes à la
fois. L’éthique, la moralité, l’ordre naturel
sont bousculés. Des expériences picturales (renforcée
par l’utilisation de l’encre de chine et d’eaux
colorées), des combinaisons chirurgicales et trans-génétiques
font apparaître des « êtres » et
des représentations anatomiques informes. Sara Stites pose
un regard microscopique, de l’ordre d’une recherche scientifique,
afin de faire émerger de l’inconnu, de l’impensable… Certains évoquent
des « phénomènes » clonés,
des créatures entre érotisme et vision funèbre, évocation
d’une monstruosité existante en chacun de nous…mais
finalement des êtres hybrides qui sont crées avec beaucoup
d’humour.
C’est cette non-compréhension, cette approche synthétisante
et totalisante qui permet d’élever le travail de Sara
Stites à une proposition universelle. La pratique artistique
permet ainsi à l’artiste une transgression des règles,
des normes et des principes existentiels de la vie, une pratique
libre, originale et innovante.

From September 20h to October 28th
Helenbeck Gallery in Nice, France is exhibiting the work of Sara Stites,
an American artist who lives and works in Miami, Florida. The aim
of the Helenbeck Gallery is to allow international artists to exhibit
in France for the first time and to permit them to reveal other
artistic worlds which are at times disconcerting and purposely unsettling.
That is the case with Sara Stites, an artist who conducts a perplexing
inquiry into the genetic intersections between the animal and the
human, some of which are recognizable and others improbable. Her
large scale works reinforce the strangeness of the mysterious and
fantastic world which at times overwhelms and disorients the viewer. Her
sculpture and smaller format drawings entice the visitor/observer
to linger and try to comprehend. Put in another way, the artist captures
an elusive and imaginary world and places It on a tangible foundation.
Chantal Helenbeck’s mission since 2001, both in Paris and on
the French Riviera in Nice, has been to develop partnerships in the
form of commissions between contemporary artists of disparate generations
(Arman, Luciano Castelli, Patrick Moya, Janone, Claude Gilli, Christine
Carol Tabusso, Arglove . . .)The special purpose and the originality
of the gallery is to provide a space where the personal explorations
of contemporary artists can meet and be exhibited.
The life-sized drawings of Sara Stites shock the
viewer with their size. These enigmatic works cross a thereshold
that is submerged
in our consciousness and seemingly ungraspable. We see familiar shapes – the
cross between animal, vegetable and human – an unnatural fusion
that txists outside of the natural world order. The flow of insects,
bones, digestive tubes, breasts, protruding wings, paws and horns
presents us with a disturbing world.
As in a scientific experiment, we see a microscopic vision that represents
the merging of the unthinkable. Cloning, erotica, the funereal, and
reflections of an existing monstrosity that lies within us all, hybridization – all
of this is evoked with a touch of humor to make it palatable.
Sara Stites’approach
to image making bring us to the realm of the universal. This original
and innovative approach to these
topics allows the artist to circumvent the rules, norms and existential
