Une exposition sur les micronations, les nations-concepts
et nations-maquettes
Organisée par l’artiste Peter Coffin, ÉTATS (faites-le
vous-même) est une exposition qui réunit un large choix
de micronations, états souverains et indépendants, nations-concepts,
mouvements de sécessions et autres. Tous se présentent
comme une réponse créatrice au climat politique global.
Peter Coffin s’est intéressé à ce sujet
lorsqu’il a fondé sa propre nation indépendante
en 2000 et a commencé à faire des recherches sur des
projets similaires partout dans le monde. ÉTATS (faites-le vous-même)
est une version nouvelle et élargie de l’exposition de
Peter Coffin, réalisée avec Robert Blackson, sur le même
sujet en 2005 à New York : We Could Have Invited Everyone (« On
aurait pu inviter tout le monde ») à la galerie Andrew
Kreps.
Les micronations sont des pays (souvent sans terre)
conçus
par des artistes, des excentriques, des mécontents politiques
ou des égocentriques. Incluant le plus souvent le concept
de monde parallèle, ces micronations entremêlent l’imaginaire,
l’artistique, le réel ainsi que des motivations aussi
variées que la répugnance à payer des impôts,
un amour immodéré des titres royaux ou même le
simple désir de créer une nouvelle civilisation.
Distincte d’une exposition à thème, ÉTATS
(faites-le vous-même) est un projet d’artiste qui se
concentre sur un phénomène qui croise art, politique,
anarchie et fiction de manière indiscernable. Les gouvernements,
les sociétés et les artistes impliqués ont tous
créé divers signes de reconnaissance (langues, devises,
constitutions, drapeaux et tous les symboles nécessairesà l’établissement
de leur souveraineté). Sont ainsi présentés
des projets d’artistes reconnus au niveau international (Michael
Ashkin, IRWIN, Gregory Green ou Atelier van Lieshout) ainsi que des
uniformes (Allison Smith), une machine à sous (State of Sabotage),
des cartes (Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland), des hymnes nationaux
(Empire of Aerica), des films documentaires, des portraits de rois
et reines pris pendant un sommet de micronations, des drapeaux, passeports,
timbres, pièces de monnaies ou lettres de citoyenneté d’une
quarantaine de nations dont l’Empire d’Atlantium, la
Principaut éde Sealand, ou le Royaume de Pinsk.
Des candidatures de citoyenneté et de naturalisation peuvent être
déposées à l’occasion de l’exposition.
An Exhibition about Micronations, Model and Concept Nations
Organized by the artist Peter Coffin, Grow Your Own is an exhibition
bringing together a wide selection of micronations, sovereign independent
states, concept nation states, and secession movements. All are
presented as a creative response to a global political climate.
Coffin’s interest in this subject began in 2000 when he initiated
his own independent nation and began collecting information about
other such projects around the world. Grow Your Own is a newly
expanded version of the exhibition on the same subject Peter Coffin
curated in 2005 at the Andrew Kreps Gallery in New York in conjunction
with Robert Blackson: We Could Have Invited Everyone.
Micronations are countries (often without territories) conceived
by artists, eccentrics, malcontents or egocentrics. These merge the
imaginary, the artistic and the real in their embrace of a parallel
world, motivated by artistic and conceptual concerns, a dislike for
paying taxes, an immoderate love of royal titles, or even the simple
desire to create a new civilization. Not a thematic group exhibition,
Grow Your Own is an artist project that blurs any ability to distinguish
between art, politics, anarchy and fiction. The governments, societies
and artists involved have created various recognizable symbols that
range from seals, anthems, languages, mottos, constitutions, flags
and all the icons with which they establish their sovereignty.
Thus projects by artists with international reputations (Michael
Ashkin, IRWIN, Gregory Green or Atelier van Lieshout) are presented
along with uniforms (Allison Smith), a coin-making machine (State
of Sabotage), maps (Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland), national anthems
(Empire of Aerica), documentary films, portraits of kings and queens
from a micronations summit, flags, passports, stamps, coins or letters
of citizenship from some forty nations including the Empire of Atlantium,
the Principality of Sealand, or the Kingdom of Pinsk.
